Psalms, Psalm 1

1 
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in thea Or waypath of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 
He will be like a tree firmly planted byb Or canalsstreams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And itsc Or foliageleaf does not wither;
Andd Or all that he does prospersin whatever he does, he prospers.
4 
The wicked are not so,
But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
5 
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 
For the LORDe Or approves or has regard toknows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalms, Psalm 2

1 
Why are thea Or Gentilesnations in an uproar
And the peoples devising a vain thing?
2 
The kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
Against the LORD and against Hisb Or MessiahAnointed, saying,
3 
“Let us tear their fetters apart
And cast away their cords from us!”
4 
He whoc Or is enthronedsits in the heavens laughs,
The Lord scoffs at them.
5 
Then He will speak to them in His anger
And terrify them in His fury, saying,
6 
“But as for Me, I haved Or consecratedinstalled My King
Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”
7 
“I will surely tell of thee Or decree: The Lord said to Medecree of the LORD:
He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8 
‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give thef Or Gentilesnations as Your inheritance,
And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.
9 
‘You shallg Another reading is rulebreak them with ah Or scepter or staffrod of iron,
You shall shatter them likei Lit potter’s wareearthenware.’”
10 
Now therefore, O kings, show discernment;
Take warning, Oj Or leadersjudges of the earth.
11

And rejoice with trembling.

m Lit Kiss; some ancient versions read Do homage purely, or, Lay hold of instructionDo homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,
For His wrath mayn Or quickly, suddenly, easilysoon be kindled.
How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

Psalms, Psalm 3

1 
O LORD, how my adversaries have increased!
Many are rising up against me.
2 
Many are sayinga Or toof my soul,
“There is nob Or salvationdeliverance for him in God.”c Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interludeSelah.
3 
But You, O LORD, are a shield about me,
My glory, and the One who lifts my head.
4 
I was crying to the LORD with my voice,
And He answered me from His holyd Or hillmountain. Selah.
5 
e Or As for me, II lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the LORD sustains me.
6 
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me round about.
7 
Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God!
For Youf Or smitehave smitten all my enemies on theg Or jawcheek;
Youh Or shatterhave shattered the teeth of the wicked.
8 
i Or DeliveranceSalvation belongs to the LORD;

Psalms, Psalm 4

1 
Answer me when I call, O Goda I.e. who maintains my rightof my righteousness!
You haveb Lit made room forrelieved me in my distress;
Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.
2 
O sons of men, how long will myc Or gloryhonor become a reproach?
How long will you love what is worthless and aim at deception?d Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interludeSelah.
3 
But know that the LORD hase Another reading is dealt wonderfully withset apart the godly man for Himself;
The LORD hears when I call to Him.

Offeri Or righteous sacrificesthe sacrifices of righteousness,
And trust in the LORD.

Many are saying, “Who will show us any good?”
Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O LORD!
7 
You have put gladness in my heart,
More than when their grain and new wine abound.
8 
In peace I willj Or at the same timeboth lie down and sleep,
For You alone, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety.

Psalms, Psalm 5

1 
Give ear to my words, O LORD,
Consider mya Or meditationgroaning.
2 
Heed the sound of my cry for help, my King and my God,
For to You I pray.
3 
In the morning, O LORD,b Or May You hearYou will hear my voice;
In the morning I will order myc Or sacrificeprayer to You and eagerly watch.
4 
For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness;
No evild Lit sojournsdwells with You.
5 
The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes;
You hate all who do iniquity.
6 
You destroy those who speak falsehood;
The LORD abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit.
7 
But as for me, by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house,
e Or TowardAt Your holy temple I will bow in reverence for You.
8 
O LORD, lead me in Your righteousness because off Or those who lie in wait for memy foes;
Make Your wayg Or smoothstraight before me.

Their inward part is destruction itself.
Their throat is an open grave;
Theyj Or make their tongue smoothflatter with their tongue.
10 
Hold them guilty, O God;
By their own devices let them fall!
In the multitude of their transgressions thrust them out,
For they are rebellious against You.
11 
But let all who take refuge in You be glad,
Let them ever sing for joy;
Andk Or You sheltermay You shelter them,
That those who love Your name may exult in You.
12 
For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O LORD,
You surround him with favor as with a shield.

Psalms, Psalm 6

1 
O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger,
Nor chasten me in Your wrath.
2 
Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am pining away;
Heal me, O LORD, for my bones are dismayed.
3 
And my soul is greatly dismayed;
But You, O LORD—how long?
4 
Return, O LORD, rescue mya Or lifesoul;
Save me because of Your lovingkindness.
5 
For there is nob Or remembrancemention of You in death;
Inc I.e. the nether worldSheol who will give You thanks?
6 
I am weary with my sighing;
Every night I make my bed swim,
I dissolve my couch with my tears.

My eye has wasted away with grief;
It has become old because of all my adversaries.

Depart from me, all you who do iniquity,
For the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping.
9 
The LORD has heard my supplication,
The LORD receives my prayer.
10 
All my enemies will be ashamed and greatly dismayed;

Psalms, Psalm 7

1 
O LORD my God, in You I have taken refuge;
Save me from all those who pursue me, and deliver me,
2 
Or he will teara Or memy soul like a lion,
b Or Rending it in pieces, whileDragging me away, while there is none to deliver.
3 
O LORD my God, if I have done this,
If there is injustice in my hands,
4 
If I have rewarded evil toc Lit him who was at peace with memy friend,
Or have plunderedd Or my adversary without causehim who without cause was my adversary,
5 
Let the enemy pursuee Or memy soul and overtakef Or meit;
And let him trample my life down to the ground

Arise, O LORD, in Your anger;
Lift up Yourself against the rage of my adversaries,

Let the assembly of the peoples encompass You,

The LORD judges the peoples;
j Lit JudgeVindicate me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and my integrity that is in me.

O let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous;
For the righteous God tries the hearts andk Lit kidneys, figurative for inner manminds.

My shield isl Lit uponwith God,
Who saves the upright in heart.
11 
God is a righteous judge,
And a God who has indignation every day.
12 
Ifm Lit hea man does not repent, He will sharpen His sword;
He has bent His bow andn Lit fixed itmade it ready.
13 
He has also preparedo Or His deadly weaponsfor Himself deadly weapons;
He makes His arrows fiery shafts.
14 
Behold, he travails with wickedness,
And he conceives mischief and brings forth falsehood.
15 
He has dug a pit and hollowed it out,
And has fallen into the hole which he made.
16 
His mischief will return upon his own head,
And his violence will descend uponp I.e. the crown of his own headhis own pate.
17 
I will give thanks to the LORD according to His righteousness
And will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

Psalms, Psalm 8

1 
O LORD, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth,
Who havea Or setdisplayed Your splendor above the heavens!
2 
From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have establishedb Or a bulwarkstrength
Because of Your adversaries,
To make the enemy and the revengeful cease.
3 
When Ic Or seeconsider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You haved Or appointed, fixedordained;
4 
What is man that Youe Or remember himtake thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?
5 
Yet You have made him a little lower thanf Or the angels; Heb ElohimGod,
And You crown him with glory and majesty!
6 
You make him to rule over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,
7 
All sheep and oxen,
And also theg Or animalsbeasts of the field,
8 
The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,
Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
9 
O LORD, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth!

Psalms, Psalm 9

1 
I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart;
I will tell of all Youra Or miracleswonders.
2 
I will be glad and exult in You;
I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.
3 
When my enemies turn back,
They stumble and perish before You.
4 
For You have maintainedb Lit my right and my causemy just cause;
You have sat on the thronec Or a righteous Judgejudging righteously.
5 
You have rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked;
You have blotted out their name forever and ever.
6 
d Or O enemy, desolations are finished forever; And their cities You have plucked upThe enemy has come to an end in perpetual ruins,
And You have uprooted the cities;
The very memory of them has perished.

But the LORDe Or sits as kingabides forever;
He has established His throne for judgment,

And He will judge the world in righteousness;
He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.

A stronghold in times of trouble;

For You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.

Sing praises to the LORD, who dwells in Zion;
Declare among the peoples His deeds.

He does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
13 
Be gracious to me, O LORD;
See my affliction from those who hate me,
You who lift me up from the gates of death,
14 
That I may tell of all Your praises,
That in the gates of the daughter of Zion
I may rejoice in Youri Or deliverancesalvation.
15 
The nations have sunk down in the pit which they have made;
In the net which they hid, their own foot has been caught.
16 
The LORD has made Himself known;
He has executed judgment.

17 
The wicked willl Or turnreturn tom I.e. the nether worldSheol,
Even all the nations who forget God.

For the needy will not always be forgotten,
Nor the hope of the afflicted perish forever.

Arise, O LORD, do not let man prevail;
Let the nations be judged before You.
20 
Put them in fear, O LORD;
Let the nations know that they are but men. Selah.

Psalms, Psalm 10

1 
Why do You stand afar off, O LORD?
Why do You hidea Or Your eyesYourself in times of trouble?
2 
In pride the wickedb Lit burnhotly pursue the afflicted;
c Or They will be caughtLet them be caught in the plots which they have devised.
3 
For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire,
Andd Or blesses the greedy manthe greedy man curses and spurns the LORD.
4 
The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does not seek Him.
All hise Or plotsthoughts are, “There is no God.”
5 
His waysf Lit are strongprosper at all times;
Your judgments are on high, out of his sight;
As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them.
6 
He says to himself, “I will not be moved;
g Lit ToThroughout all generations I will not be in adversity.”
7 
His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression;
Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.
8 
He sits in the lurking places of the villages;
In the hiding places he kills the innocent;
His eyesh Lit lie in waitstealthily watch for thei Or poorunfortunate.
9 
He lurks in a hiding place as a lion in hisj Or thicketlair;
He lurks to catch the afflicted;
He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his net.
10 
Hek Or is crushedcrouches, hel Or is bowed downbows down,
And them Or poorunfortunate falln Or into his clawsby his mighty ones.
11 
He says to himself, “God has forgotten;
He has hidden His face; He will never see it.”
12 
Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up Your hand.
Do not forget the afflicted.
13 
Why has the wicked spurned God?
He has said to himself, “You will not require it.”
14 
You have seen it, for You have beheld mischief and vexation too Lit put, givetake it into Your hand.
Thep Or poorunfortunate commits himself to You;
You have been the helper of the orphan.
15 
Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer,
q Or May You seekSeek out his wickedness until You find none.
16 
The LORD is King forever and ever;
Nations have perished from His land.
17 
O LORD, You have heard the desire of ther Or afflictedhumble;
You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear
18 
Tos Lit judgevindicate the orphan and the oppressed,
So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror.
