2 Now the earth was1 formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. |
26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth,2 and over all the creatures that move along the ground." |
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested1 from all his work. |
6 but streams4 came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground- |
7 the LORD God formed the man5 from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. |
12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin6 and onyx are also there.) |
13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.7 |
20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam8 no suitable helper was found. |
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs9 and closed up the place with flesh. |
22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib10 he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. |
24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side5 of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. |
8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field."4 And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. |
15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so5 ; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. |
16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod,6 east of Eden. |
22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of7 bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah. |
25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,8 saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him." |
26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on9 the name of the LORD . |
2 He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called them "man.1 " |
6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father2 of Enosh. |
29 He named him Noah3 and said, "He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed." |
14 So make yourself an ark of cypress3 wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. |
15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high.4 |
2 Take with you seven1 of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, |
21 The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though1 every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. |
20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded1 to plant a vineyard. |
2 The sons1 of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras. |
4 The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittim and the Rodanim.2 |
6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim,3 Put and Canaan. |
8 Cush was the father4 of Nimrod, who grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth. |
11 From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir,7 Calah |
15 Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn,8 and of the Hittites, |
21 Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was9 Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber. |
23 The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether and Meshech.10 |
24 Arphaxad was the father of11 Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber. |
25 Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg,12 because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan. |
9 That is why it was called Babel3 -because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth. |
13 And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.4 |
