1 Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, acalled as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of abdescendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with powercby the resurrection from the dead, according to thedSpirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleshipeto bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; |
7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called asfsaints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christgfor you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world. 9 For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you, 10 always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you. 11 For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may behestablished; 12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 I amiunder obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. |
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truthlin unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evidentmwithin them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did notnhonor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals andocrawling creatures. |
26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which isrunnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committingsindecent acts and receiving inttheir own persons the due penalty of their error. |
28 And just as they did not see fituto acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, vhaters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. |
1 Therefore you have no excuse, aeveryone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2 And we know that the judgment of Godbrightly falls upon those who practice such things. 3 But do you suppose this, O man, cwhen you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? 5 Butdbecause of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS: 7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. 9 There will be tribulation and distressefor every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God. |
12 For all who have sinnedfwithout the Law will also perishgwithout the Law, and all who have sinnedhunder the Law will be judgediby the Law; 13 for it is not the hearersjof the Law who arekjust before God, but the doerslof the Law will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles who do not havemthe Law doninstinctively the things of the Law, these, not havingothe Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus. |
17 But if you bear the name “Jew” and relypupon the Law and boast in God, 18 and know His will andqapprove the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law, 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 arcorrector of the foolish, a teacher ofsthe immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth, 21 you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You whotpreach that one shall not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say that one should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boastuin the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? 24 For “THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU,” just as it is written. |
25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you practicevthe Law; but if you are a transgressorwof the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 So if thexuncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you whoythough having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressorzof the Law? 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God. |
1 Then whataadvantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? 2 Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What then? If somebdid not believe, theircunbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? 4 May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written,“THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOUdARE JUDGED.” |
5 But if our unrighteousnessedemonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.) 6 May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? 7 But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner? 8 And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “Let us do evil that good may come”?fTheir condemnation is just. |
9 What then?gAre we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; 10 as it is written,“THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; 12ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.” |
21 But now apartkfrom the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all thoselwho believe; for there is no distinction; 23 for allmhave sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as anpropitiationoin His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, pbecause in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one whoqhas faith in Jesus. |
27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 rFor we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from workssof the Law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed God who will justify thetcircumciseduby faith and thevuncircumcised through faith is one. |
31 Do we then nullifywthe Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law. |
1 What then shall we say that Abraham, aour forefather according to the flesh, has found? 2 For if Abraham was justifiedbby works, he has something to boast about, but notcbefore God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.” 4 Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: |
9 Is this blessing then ondthe circumcised, or onethe uncircumcised also? For we say, “FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.” 10 How then was it credited? While he wasfcircumcised, orguncircumcised? Not whilehcircumcised, but whileiuncircumcised; 11 and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith whichjhe had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham whichkhe had while uncircumcised. |
13 For the promise to Abraham or to hisldescendants that he would be heir of the world was notmthrough the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who arenof the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15 for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation. |
16 For this reason it isoby faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all thepdescendants, not only toqthose who are of the Law, but also torthose who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, 17 (as it is written, “A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE YOU”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead andscalls into being that which does not exist. 18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “SO SHALL YOURtDESCENDANTS BE.” 19 Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb; 20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform. 22 Therefore IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. 23 Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, 24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification. |
