Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Paul's attitude toward a person's obligations can at first glance appear somewhat contradictory. He says: if you owe someone something, that debt binds you and requires repayment. Everyone must receive what he has a right to, and this cannot be denied to anyone... 

 

Reasoning about earthly authorities, Paul remains faithful to the witness about the Kingdom...
