In Deuteronomy 22:5, it is written that a woman must not wear men's clothing, and a man must not wear women's clothing, because it is an abomination to God. Is this commandment truly applicable to the New Testament era and modern life, when so many women wear jeans? And does this mean that we should avoid fellowship with such women?

 

At the time when the commandment Deu 22:5 was given, both men's and women's clothing consisted of skirt-like tunics of varying lengths. Trousers were introduced to Europe by Germanic peoples in the early Middle Ages, and to the Middle East by Europeans during the era of the Crusades. Therefore, the issue does not lie in the type of garment, and jeans may perfectly well serve as women's clothing just as much as men's. The commandment forbids portraying oneself as a person of the opposite sex and is part of a broader set of laws prohibiting same-sex intimacy. If a woman wears jeans not for such a purpose, but simply as comfortable clothing for everyday modern life, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it...
