1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and speak to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 2 For if you refuse to let them go anda Lit still holdcontinue to hold them, 3 behold, the hand of the LORDb Lit will bewill come with a very severe pestilence on your livestock which are in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the herds, and on the flocks. 4 But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing will die of all that belongs to the sons of Israel.”’” 5 The LORD set a definite time, saying, “Tomorrow the LORD will do this thing in the land.” 6 So the LORD did this thing on the next day, and all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the sons of Israel, not one died. 7 Pharaoh sent, and behold, there was not even one of the livestock of Israel dead. But the heart of Pharaoh wasc Lit heavyhardened, and he did not let the people go.
8 Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Take for yourselves handfuls of soot from a kiln, and let Moses throw it toward the sky in the sight of Pharaoh. 9 It will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and will become boils breaking out with sores on man and beast through all the land of Egypt.” 10 So they took soot from a kiln, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses threw it toward the sky, and it became boils breaking out with sores on man and beast. 11 Thed Or soothsayer priestsmagicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicianse Lit and on allas well as on all the Egyptians. 12 And the LORDf Lit made stronghardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had spoken to Moses.
13 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 14 For this time I will send all My plaguesg Lit to your hearton you and your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is no one like Me in all the earth. 15 For if by now I had put forth My hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, you would then have been cut off from the earth. 16 But, indeed, for this reason I have allowed you toh Lit standremain, in order to show you My power and in order to proclaim My name through all the earth. 17 Still you exalt yourself against My peoplei Lit so as not to letby not letting them go.
18 Behold, about this time tomorrow, I willj Lit cause to rainsend a very heavy hail, such as has not been seen in Egypt from the day it was foundedk Lit and until nowuntil now. 19 Now therefore send, bring your livestock and whatever you have in the field to safety. Every man and beast that is found in the field and is not brought home, when the hail comes down on them, will die.”’” 20 The one among the servants of Pharaoh whol Or reveredfeared the word of the LORD made his servants and his livestock flee into the houses; 21 but he whom Lit did not set his heart topaid no regard to the word of the LORDn Lit then leftleft his servants and his livestock in the field.
22 Now the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky, thato Lit there may be hailhail may fall on all the land of Egypt, on man and on beast and on every plant of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.” 23 Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, and the LORDp Lit gavesentq Lit soundsthunder and hail, and fire ran down to the earth. And the LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt. 24 So there was hail, and firer Lit taking hold of itselfflashing continually in the midst of the hail, very severe, such as had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25 The hail struck all that was in the field through all the land of Egypt, both man and beast; the hail also struck every plant of the field and shattered every tree of the field. 26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the sons of Israel were, there was no hail.
27 Then Pharaohs Lit sent and calledsent for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “I have sinned this time; the LORD is the righteous one, and I and my people are the wicked ones. 28 Make supplication to the LORD, for there has been enough of God’st Lit soundsthunder and hail; and I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer.” 29 Moses said to him, “As soon as I go out of the city, I will spread out myu Lit palmshands to the LORD; thev Lit soundsthunder will cease and there will be hail no longer, that you may know that the earth is the LORD’S. 30 But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yetw Or reverencefearx Lit before the Lordthe LORD God.” 31 (Now the flax and the barley werey Lit smittenruined, for the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud. 32 But the wheat and the spelt were notz Lit smittenruined, for they ripen late.) 33 So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread out hisaa Lit palmshands to the LORD; and theab Lit soundsthunder and the hail ceased, and rainac Lit was not pouredno longer poured on the earth. 34 But when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and thead Lit soundsthunder had ceased, he sinned again andae Lit made heavyhardened his heart, he and his servants. 35 Pharaoh’s heart wasaf Lit stronghardened, and he did not let the sons of Israel go, just as the LORD had spoken through Moses.

Катастрофа, захватившая Египет, описывается библейским автором очень схематично, выводы напрашиваются сами собой: нечестивый царь — неверующий народ — наказание, - и наоборот: пророк — верный народ — благополучие (израильтян не касается ни одна из египетских «казней»). На первый взгляд такое богословие довольно примитивно. Разве верующие люди не страдают? Разве в мировых катастрофах не гибнут люди разных убеждений, «хорошие» и «плохие»? Да и как различить хороших и плохих, и разве Бог не «благ к неблагодарным и злым»? За этим древним и специфическим языком («врагов казнить, наших помиловать») стоит и другая, более универсальная истина: зло, происходящее в мире, является следствием человеческого зла (пускай не напрямую), смерть приходит в мир из-за недоверия Богу, а следовательно, вера — путь жизни, пусть даже мы не всегда можем видеть это своими глазами.

Сегодняшнее чтение во многом отвечает на вопрос о том, почему всё же Бог не смог или не захотел смягчить сердце фараона. Этим ответом является упоминание о том, что Бог вовсе не для того попускает казни египетские, чтобы просто стереть Египет и самого фараона с лица земли и убрать его с дороги, как досадную помеху Своим планам. Если бы цель заключалась только в этом, Богу ничего не стоило бы осуществить её намного быстрее (ст. 14 – 16). Но Ему важно, чтобы в противостоянии с упрямым фараоном стала очевидной для всех сила Божия (ст. 16). Казалось бы, если так, то лучшим доказательством силы и стало бы полное исчезновение с лица земли Египта и самого фараона. Но, видимо, сила Божия проявляется иначе. Ведь если бы, к примеру, Египет и впрямь был бы погублен каким-нибудь чудовищным природным катаклизмом, сила Божия проявила бы себя лишь как обычная природная сила, а Бог Библии в таком случае не очень отличался бы от любого языческого бога-громовника, разве лишь превосходя любого из них масштабами. Но Богу нужно не это. Ему нужны не трупы и не руины, а свидетели. Ведь отношения у Бога могут быть только с живыми людьми, и только живые люди могут рассказать другим о своих отношениях с Богом. По-видимому, способность Бога сокрушать города и страны одним ударом не является чем-то основополагающим для Его отношений с нами. Во всяком случае, Сам Он, обращаясь к человеку, внимания на этом не акцентирует. А вот признание Его как Владыки мироздания для Него чрезвычайно важно, и от фараона Он ждёт хотя бы такого признания — минимума, без которого никакие отношения с Ним человека становятся невозможны. И потому так важно для Него добровольное согласие фараона. Казалось бы, добровольным оно всё равно не является, ведь все казни египетские были, на первый взгляд, именно демонстрацией силы. Но демонстрация эта была, во-первых, избирательной, так что многие стихийные бедствия обошли народ Божий стороной (один из примеров тому мы находим и в сегодняшнем чтении, ст. 25 – 26), и, во-вторых, она была управляемой, прекращаясь по просьбе Моисея (пример тому есть и в сегодняшнем отрывке, ст. 33). Всё это должно было дать понять фараону, что Бог евреев, Которым он пренебрегает, хотя и может всё, тем не менее не стремится просто продемонстрировать Своё превосходство, Он хочет установления доверительных отношений, которые вполне возможны, если фараон решится признать Его Владыкой мира и, соответственно, исполнить то, чего Бог от него требует. Вначале добровольное и свободное признание власти Божией, и лишь потом — следование Его воле. Но если сердце человека продолжает упорствовать, такие отношения становятся невозможны, и тогда человек начинает видеть перед собой другой лик Бога, куда менее к нему благосклонный.
