Psalms, Psalm 73

BOOK 3> 1 The End of the Wicked Contrasted with That of the Righteous.
Surely God is good to Israel,
To those who are pure in heart!
But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling,
My stepsa Lit were caused to sliphad almost slipped.
For I was envious of theb Or boastersarrogant
As I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
For there are no pains in their death,
And theirc Or bellybody is fat.
They are notd Lit in the trouble of menin trouble as othere Or mortalsmen,
Nor are they plaguedf Lit withlike mankind.
Therefore pride is their necklace;
The garment of violence covers them.
Their eyeg Lit goes forthbulges from fatness;
The imaginations of their hearth Lit overflowrun riot.
They mock andi Or they speak in wickedness; From on high they speak of oppressionwickedly speak of oppression;
They speak from on high.
They have set their mouthj Or inagainst the heavens,
And their tonguek Lit walksparades through the earth.
10
Thereforel Or Hishis people return to this place,
And waters of abundance arem Lit drained outdrunk by them.
11
They say, “How does God know?
And is there knowledgen Lit inwith the Most High?”
12
Behold, these are the wicked;
And always at ease, they have increased in wealth.
13
Surely in vain I haveo Or cleansed my heartkept my heart pure
And washed my hands in innocence;
14
For I have been stricken all day long
Andp Lit my chasteningchastened every morning.
15
If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
Behold, I would have betrayed the generation of Your children.
16
When I pondered to understand this,
It wasq Lit labor, troubletroublesome in my sight
17
Until I came into ther Lit sanctuariessanctuary of God;
Then I perceived their end.
18
Surely You set them in slippery places;
You cast them down tos Lit ruinsdestruction.
19
How they aret Lit become a desolationdestroyed in a moment!
They are utterly swept away by sudden terrors!
20
Like a dream when one awakes,
O Lord, when aroused, You will despise theiru Or imageform.
21
When my heart was embittered
And I was piercedv Lit in my kidneyswithin,
22
Then I was senseless and ignorant;
I was likew Or an animala beastx Lit with Youbefore You.
23
Nevertheless I am continually with You;
You have taken hold of my right hand.
24
With Your counsel You will guide me,
And afterward receive mey Or with honorto glory.
25
Whom have I in heaven but You?
Andz Or withbesides You, I desire nothing on earth.
26
My flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is theaa Lit rockstrength of my heart and my portion forever.
27
For, behold, those who are far from You will perish;
You haveab Or silenceddestroyed all those whoac Lit go to a whoring fromare unfaithful to You.
28
But as for me, the nearness of God is my good;
I have made the Lordad Heb YHWH, usually rendered LordGOD my refuge,
That I may tell of all Your works.

Psalms, Psalm 74

BOOK 3> 1 An Appeal against the Devastation of the Land by the Enemy.
O God, why have You rejected us forever?
Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Youra Or pasturingpasture?
Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old,
Which You have redeemed to be the tribe of Your inheritance;
And this Mount Zion, where You have dwelt.
b Lit Lift upTurn Your footsteps toward the perpetual ruins;
The enemy has damaged everything within the sanctuary.
Your adversaries have roared in the midst of Your meeting place;
They have set up their ownc Lit signsstandards for signs.
It seems as if one had lifted up
Hisd Lit axesaxe in ae Lit thicketforest of trees.
And nowf Lit altogetherall its carved work
They smash with hatchet andg Or axeshammers.
They haveh Lit set on fireburned Your sanctuaryi Or To the ground they...to the ground;
They have defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
They said in their heart, “Let usj Lit altogethercompletelyk Or oppresssubdue them.”
They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
We do not see our signs;
There is no longer any prophet,
Nor is there any among us who knows how long.
10
How long, O God, will the adversary revile,
And the enemy spurn Your name forever?
11
Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand?
From within Your bosom, destroy them!
12
Yet God is my king from of old,
Who works deeds of deliverance in the midst of the earth.
13
l Or You YourselfYou divided the sea by Your strength;
m Or You YourselfYou broke the heads of the sea monstersn Lit onin the waters.
14
o Or You YourselfYou crushed the heads ofp Or sea monsterLeviathan;
q Or You YourselfYou gave him as food for ther Lit peoplecreatures of the wilderness.
15
s Or You YourselfYou broke open springs and torrents;
t Or You YourselfYou dried up ever-flowing streams.
16
Yours is the day, Yours also is the night;
u Or You YourselfYou have prepared thev Or luminarylight and the sun.
17
w Or You YourselfYou have established all the boundaries of the earth;
x Or You YourselfYou havey Or formedmade summer and winter.
18
Remember this,z Or that the enemy has reviled the LordO LORD, that the enemy has reviled,
And a foolish people has spurned Your name.
19
Do not deliver the soul of Your turtledove to the wild beast;
Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.
20
Consider the covenant;
For the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence.
21
Let not the oppressed return dishonored;
Let the afflicted and needy praise Your name.
22
Arise, O God, and plead Your own cause;
Rememberaa Lit Your reproach from the foolish manhow the foolish man reproaches You all day long.
23
Do not forget the voice of Your adversaries,
The uproar of those who rise against You which ascends continually.

Psalms, Psalm 75

BOOK 3> 1 God Abases the Proud, but Exalts the Righteous.
We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks,
For Your name is near;
Men declare Your wondrous works.
“When I select an appointed time,
It is I who judge with equity.
“The earth and all who dwell in ita Or tottermelt;
It is I who have firmly set its pillars.b Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interludeSelah.
“I said to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
And to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up the horn;
Do not lift up your horn on high,
Do not speak with insolentc Lit neckpride.’”
For not from the east, nor from the west,
Nor from thed Or mountainous desertdesert comes exaltation;
But God is the Judge;
He puts down one and exalts another.
For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, and the wine foams;
It ise Lit full of mixturewell mixed, and He pours out of this;
Surely all the wicked of the earth must drain and drink down its dregs.
But as for me, I will declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10
And all the horns of the wickedf Heb IHe will cut off,
But the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.

Psalms, Psalm 76

BOOK 3> 1 The Victorious Power of the God of Jacob.
God is known in Judah;
His name is great in Israel.
Hisa Lit sheltertabernacle is in Salem;
His dwelling place also is in Zion.
There He broke theb Lit fiery shafts of the bowflaming arrows,
The shield and the sword and thec Lit battleweapons of war.d Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interludeSelah.
You are resplendent,
e Or Majestic from the mountainsMore majestic than the mountains of prey.
The stouthearted were plundered,
f Lit They slumbered their sleepThey sank into sleep;
And none of theg Lit men of might have found their handswarriors could use his hands.
At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob,
Bothh Lit chariotrider and horse were cast into a dead sleep.
You, even You, are to be feared;
And who may stand in Your presence when oncei Lit Your anger isYou are angry?
You caused judgment to be heard from heaven;
The earth feared and was still
When God arose to judgment,
To save all the humble of the earth. Selah.
10
For thej Lit wrathswrath of man shall praise You;
With a remnant of wrath You will gird Yourself.
11
Make vows to the LORD your God and fulfill them;
Let all who are around Him bring gifts to Him who is to be feared.
12
He will cut off the spirit of princes;
He isk Lit awesome tofeared by the kings of the earth.

Psalms, Psalm 77

BOOK 3> 1 Comfort in Trouble from Recalling God’s Mighty Deeds.
My voice rises to God, and I will cry aloud;
My voice rises to God, and He will hear me.
In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord;
In the night my hand was stretched outa Lit and did not grow numbwithout weariness;
My soul refused to be comforted.
When I remember God, then I am disturbed;
When I sigh, then my spirit grows faint.b Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interludeSelah.
You have held my eyelids open;
I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
I have considered the days of old,
The years of long ago.
I will remember my song in the night;
I will meditate with my heart,
And my spiritc Lit searchedponders:
Will the Lord reject forever?
And will He never be favorable again?
Has His lovingkindness ceased forever?
Has Hisd Lit wordpromise come to an ende Lit from generation to generationforever?
Has God forgotten to be gracious,
Or has He in angerf Lit shut upwithdrawn His compassion? Selah.
10
Then I said, “It is myg Or infirmity, the years of the right hand of the Most Highgrief,
That the right hand of the Most High has changed.”
11
I shall remember the deeds ofh Heb Yahthe LORD;
Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
12
I will meditate on all Your work
And muse on Your deeds.
13
Your way, O God, is holy;
What god is great like our God?
14
You are the God who works wonders;
You have made known Your strength among the peoples.
15
You have by Youri Lit armpower redeemed Your people,
The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16
The waters saw You, O God;
The waters saw You, they were in anguish;
The deeps also trembled.
17
The clouds poured out water;
The skies gave forth a sound;
Your arrowsj Lit wentflashed here and there.
18
The sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
The lightnings lit up the world;
The earth trembled and shook.
19
Your way was in the sea
And Your paths in the mighty waters,
And Your footprints may not be known.
20
You led Your people like a flock
By the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Psalms, Psalm 78

BOOK 3> 1 God’s Guidance of His People in Spite of Their Unfaithfulness.
Listen, O my people, to mya Or law, teachinginstruction;
Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings of old,
Which we have heard and known,
And our fathers have told us.
We will not conceal them from their children,
But tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD,
And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.
For He established a testimony in Jacob
And appointed a law in Israel,
Which He commanded our fathers
That they shouldb Lit make them knownteach them to their children,
That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born,
That they may arise and tell them to their children,
That they should put their confidence in God
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments,
And not be like their fathers,
A stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation that did notc Or put rightprepare its heart
And whose spirit was not faithful to God.
The sons of Ephraimd Or beingwere archers equipped with bows,
Yet they turned back in the day of battle.
10
They did not keep the covenant of God
And refused to walk in His law;
11
They forgot His deeds
And Hise Or wonderful worksmiracles that He had shown them.
12
He wrought wonders before their fathers
In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
13
He divided the sea and caused them to pass through,
And He made the waters stand up like a heap.
14
Then He led them with the cloud by day
And all the night with a light of fire.
15
He split the rocks in the wilderness
And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.
16
He brought forth streams also from the rock
And caused waters to run down like rivers.
17
Yet they still continued to sin against Him,
To rebel against the Most High in the desert.
18
And in their heart they put God to the test
By asking food according to their desire.
19
Then they spoke against God;
They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20
“Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out,
And streams were overflowing;
Can He give bread also?
Will He providef Lit fleshmeat for His people?”
21
Therefore the LORD heard andg Or became infuriatedwas full of wrath;
And a fire was kindled against Jacob
And anger also mounted against Israel,
22
Because they did not believe in God
And did not trust in His salvation.
23
Yet He commanded the clouds above
And opened the doors of heaven;
24
He rained down manna upon them to eat
And gave themh Lit grainfood from heaven.
25
Man did eat the bread ofi Lit mighty onesangels;
He sent themj Or provisionfoodk Lit to satiationin abundance.
26
He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens
And by Hisl Or strengthpower He directed the south wind.
27
When He rainedm Lit fleshmeat upon them like the dust,
Even winged fowl like the sand of the seas,
28
Then He let them fall in the midst ofn Lit Histheir camp,
Round about their dwellings.
29
So they ate and were well filled,
And their desire He gave to them.
30
o Lit They were not estranged fromBefore they had satisfied their desire,
While their food was in their mouths,
31
The anger of God rose against them
And killedp Lit among their fat onessome of their stoutest ones,
Andq Lit caused to bow downsubdued the choice men of Israel.
32
In spite of all this they still sinned
And did not believe in His wonderful works.
33
So He brought their days to an end inr Lit vanity, a mere breathfutility
And their years in sudden terror.
34
When He killed them, then they sought Him,
And returned and searched diligently for God;
35
And they remembered that God was their rock,
And the Most High God their Redeemer.
36
But they deceived Him with their mouth
And lied to Him with their tongue.
37
For their heart was not steadfast toward Him,
Nor were they faithful in His covenant.
38
But He, being compassionate,s Lit covered over, atoned forforgave their iniquity and did not destroy them;
And often Het Lit turned awayrestrained His anger
And did not arouse all His wrath.
39
Thus He remembered that they were but flesh,
Au Or breathwind that passes and does not return.
40
How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness
And grieved Him in the desert!
41
Again and again theyv Or put God to the testtempted God,
And pained the Holy One of Israel.
42
They did not remember Hisw Lit handpower,
The day when He redeemed them from the adversary,
43
When He performed His signs in Egypt
And His marvels in the field of Zoan,
44
And turned their rivers to blood,
And their streams, they could not drink.
45
He sent among them swarms of flies which devoured them,
And frogs which destroyed them.
46
He gave also their crops to the grasshopper
And the product of their labor to the locust.
47
Hex Lit was killingdestroyed their vines with hailstones
And their sycamore trees with frost.
48
He gave over their cattle also to the hailstones
And their herds to bolts of lightning.
49
He sent upon them His burning anger,
Fury and indignation and trouble,
y Lit A deputation of angels of evilA band of destroying angels.
50
He leveled a path for His anger;
He did not spare their soul from death,
But gave over their life to the plague,
51
And smote all the firstborn in Egypt,
The first issue of their virility in the tents of Ham.
52
But He led forth His own people like sheep
And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;
53
He led them safely, so that they did not fear;
But the sea engulfed their enemies.
54
So He brought them to His holyz Lit border, territoryland,
To thisaa Or mountainhill country which His right hand had gained.
55
He also drove out the nations before them
And apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
56
Yet theyab Or put to the testtempted and rebelled against the Most High God
And did not keep His testimonies,
57
But turned back and acted treacherously like their fathers;
They turned aside like a treacherous bow.
58
For they provoked Him with their high places
And aroused His jealousy with their graven images.
59
When God heard, Heac Or became infuriatedwas filled with wrath
And greatly abhorred Israel;
60
So that He abandoned the dwelling place at Shiloh,
The tentad Some ancient versions read where He dweltwhich He had pitched among men,
61
And gave up His strength to captivity
And His glory into the hand of the adversary.
62
He also delivered His people to the sword,
Andae Or became infuriatedwas filled with wrath at His inheritance.
63
Fire devouredaf Or theirHis young men,
Andag Or theirHis virgins had no wedding songs.
64
ah Or theirHis priests fell by the sword,
Andai Or theirHis widows could not weep.
65
Then the Lord awoke as if from sleep,
Like a warrioraj Or sobered up fromovercome by wine.
66
Heak Lit smotedrove His adversaries backward;
He put on them an everlasting reproach.
67
He also rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68
But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion which He loved.
69
And He built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has founded forever.
70
He also chose David His servant
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71
Fromal Lit followingthe care of theam Lit ewes which gave suck, He...ewes with suckling lambs He brought him
To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.
72
So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart,
And guided them with his skillful hands.

BOOK 3> 1 A Lament over the Destruction of Jerusalem, and Prayer for Help.
O God, the nations havea Lit come intoinvaded Your inheritance;
They have defiled Your holy temple;
They have laid Jerusalem in ruins.
They have given the dead bodies of Your servants for food to the birds of the heavens,
The flesh of Your godly ones to the beasts of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water round about Jerusalem;
And there was no one to bury them.
We have become a reproach to our neighbors,
A scoffing and derision to those around us.
How long, O LORD? Will You be angry forever?
Will Your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour out Your wrath upon the nations which do not know You,
And upon the kingdoms which do not call upon Your name.
For they have devoured Jacob
And laid waste hisb Lit pasturehabitation.
Do not rememberc Or our former iniquitiesthe iniquities of our forefathers against us;
Let Your compassion come quickly to meet us,
For we are brought very low.
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name;
And deliver us andd Lit cover over, atone forforgive our sins for Your name’s sake.
10
Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
Let there be known among the nations in our sight,

11
Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Youre Lit armpower preservef Lit the children of deaththose who are doomed to die.

BOOK 3> 1 God Implored to Rescue His People from Their Calamities.
Oh, give ear, Shepherd of Israel,
You who lead Joseph like a flock;
You who are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!
Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up Your power
And come to save us!
O God, restore us
And cause Your face to shine upon us,a Or that we mayand we will be saved.
O LORD God of hosts,
How long will Youb Lit smoke againstbe angry with the prayer of Your people?
You have fed them with the bread of tears,

You make usd Lit a strife toan object of contention to our neighbors,

O God of hosts, restore us
And cause Your face to shine upon us,e Or that we mayand we will be saved.
You removed a vine from Egypt;
You drove out thef Or Gentilesnations and planted it.
You cleared the ground before it,
And it took deep root and filled the land.
10
The mountains were covered with its shadow,
Andg Or its boughs are like the cedars of Godthe cedars of God with its boughs.
11
It was sending out its branches to the sea
And its shoots to the River.
12
Why have You broken down itsh Or walls, fenceshedges,
So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?
13
A boar from the forest eats it away
And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.
14
O God of hosts, turn again now, we beseech You;
Look down from heaven and see, and take care of this vine,

Upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself.
18
Then we shall not turn back from You;
Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.
19
O LORD God of hosts, restore us;
Cause Your face to shine upon us,l Or that we mayand we will be saved.

16
Fill their faces with dishonor,
That they may seek Your name, O LORD.
