Most often, the mystery of Christmas is connected for us with a pleasant festive mood. In general, news of the birth of a child in the family of acquaintances, people not too close to us, is usually accompanied by a feeling of tenderness and joy. But the birth of a child in one's own family is often connected with anxious, and not always positive, expectation: we do not know for certain how the child is spending those nine months, whether he is healthy, whether everything is normal, how the birth will go, or whether the doctors will let us down. And with the birth of a child, our anxiety and worry do not weaken; on the contrary, they grow day by day. Our children make us feel the breath of death always and everywhere.

The celebration of Christmas leads to the realization of an equally terrifying fact: God came into the world to give us the Kingdom, but this Kingdom, which He possesses, can be handed over to us only through a testament. We refused the possibility of living in the Kingdom, choosing not life and good, but death and evil. And then He was born, became tiny and defenseless, entrusting Himself to human beings completely and without reserve. He was born into the world, and that means He takes upon Himself the whole weight of death. He wants to bring us into the Kingdom, and one path remained for Him: to bequeath to us what belongs to Him.

8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?
10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.
11 And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.
15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:
18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.
22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!
23 And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.
25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.

30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.

The Mount of Olives is the beginning of Christ's glorification. It is His Entry into Jerusalem, the entry of the King. And He returns to the same mountain after He has eaten the Passover with the disciples. And again from the Mount of Olives begins Christ's glorification, now as Savior of the World.

And at the Passover meal Christ explains to the apostles what He Himself had been doing and what is being accomplished. He is the One who serves, and beside Him were people whose hearts had already changed. People to whom He promises a meal in the Kingdom of Heaven. And to whom, as witnesses of His deeds, He bequeaths the Communion of His Body and Blood. Communion in His death and imminent Resurrection. Communion in the glory of Christ, through which all Christians have been strengthened and saved from those days onward.

The feast of Passover is approaching, and the disciples are sure that in a few hours their Teacher will become the promised King of Israel, will offer in the Temple an atoning sacrifice for His people, and everyone will serve Him, and therefore also them, His closest companions. Jesus, as it were, confirms their words: everything will happen very soon - He will not taste the Passover meal until He offers the sacrifice in the triumph of the Kingdom of God, and the disciples will have twelve thrones and authority over all Israel.

And here the paradox of the Gospel reaches its highest point: everything will be exactly so, but everything will be completely different. Jesus Himself will become the Passover sacrifice for the sin of the world. He will be the least of people - He will be executed as a criminal; the disciples will face persecution and the collapse of their hopes. The sacrifice has been offered, and those who share in it have become citizens of the Kingdom, which is utterly unlike all the other kingdoms of the world.

The Last Supper takes place in a large upper room, already prepared to receive guests. This upper room is like a person who, after being freed from dark forces, should invite Christ in so that He may dwell constantly in his heart. Christ entered the upper room in Jerusalem to celebrate the Last Supper, but even today every heart is capable of becoming such an upper room through the Eucharist.

If Jesus is not invited into the swept and prepared upper room, then unclean spirits will settle there. Many times attempts have been made to justify Judas and to attribute lofty motives to his betrayal, but the Evangelist testifies plainly: Satan entered Judas. He entered precisely because Judas turned away from the Teacher. And we see that the other disciples too, though they did not commit betrayal as Judas did, thought in categories of earthly success. On the eve of the Teacher's sufferings, about which they had been warned, they frivolously argue about who is greatest... Fallen human nature is ready to distort everything; even Christian service it tries to turn into a means of self-assertion. And if such a temptation begins to overcome us, may the Savior's words never fall silent in our consciousness: let the greatest among you be as the younger, and the leader as the one who serves.
