NOTES for Jer 18:1-23

The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.
Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.
And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;
If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;
10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.
11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.
12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.
13 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.
14 Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?
15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;
16 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.
17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.
18 Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.
19 Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.
20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.
21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.
22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.
23 Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.

The potter is not bound to the particular piece of clay from which the defective vessel was made; he does not have to shape only that clay. Yet from this very piece he forms another vessel anew. Still, it is not an entirely different vessel either: before us is the same familiar clay, but healed of its former flaws.

One of the most important biblical revelations says this: the Lord has authority to cancel what He has planned, but by His good will He remains faithful to the covenant He made with the people, even though, strictly speaking, He is not obliged to keep faith that we have unilaterally trampled. And He does not want the destruction of the unfaithful people, though He does not prevent the trials that have fallen upon them; He wants to transform them, to make them another people, healed of sinful diseases.

It may look as if the prophet stands before the Lord and intercedes for the people, guided only by his own humane considerations or family feeling. But the Lord Himself placed the prophet before Himself, which means He entrusted him with interceding for sinners. Thoughts about the justice of retribution for sins are not foreign to the prophet at all, but behind his understanding of just repayment for evil the outlines of other facets of the same justice already appear, a justice inseparable from mercy toward confused sinners.

Coming into contact with the mystery of God reveals the human inability to describe that mystery adequately. He is known through paradox. The image of the potter and the clay that he shapes as he wishes paints a picture of God's complete sovereignty over His creation: everything that happens to us depends entirely on Him, and He Himself chooses what to fashion from our lives. Yet at once we see that a person is the maker of his own happiness: his whole life depends on his right conduct. God and man shape the destiny of the world together, taking part in each of its moments, and this is an unfathomable mystery. As Easter approaches, we remember it in a special way: the mystery of our salvation, in which God conquered death, raised all people in Christ, and awaits our response, our joining the new life revealed in His risen Son.

In every society sometimes come moments, when no one already believes in anybody. It is of course first of all about traditional institutions, which in this case were "the wise, the priest and the prophet": because in the Jewish society in the time of Jeremiah, they were personified, respectively the authority of the society, the priesthood and charismatic religious leadership. We can discuss about the reasons of the fall of the traditional authorities, especially that the situation in this respect has never and nowhere been unambiguous. But independently of the reasons, the result was always the same: people stop believing not only in the traditional institutions and their representatives, but also to each other.

They become incapable to unite for something, they find themselves in the state to unite only against somebody, who proposes something, who calls to something or generally at least something that appears in a spiritual and public sense. It is quite obvious that the crisis in this case is not ideological, but spiritual. The atomization of the society is only the external manifestation of a serious spiritual disease. Often this disease is connected to the depreciation (before all, a spiritual depreciation) of the very institutions, with which the crisis begins in the society in general. But the spiritual disease is never or almost never limited only with the representatives of these institutions, it begins only with them, then capturing the whole society.

The reason is always, as it was in the Judea in the time of Jeremiah, the negligence of God's commandments and the hostility toward those who try to remind about them. Of course, there is multitude of problems in a society, where the commandments and the law given by God are forgotten, and the more there are problems, the less the public personalities and the rulers of mind remember about God. The one who remembers in such situation about God becomes the general enemy: all to what he calls seems to most useless or, at least, inappropriate.

Everybody wants to get rid of such person in the hope that, as soon as he will disappear, will be solved all the problems that are not solved because this person speaks all the time about God and about His law, evaluating everything with God's measure, which was revealed to him. Of course, when they shall really get rid of him, the problems will not at all be solved. It is quite possible that it will only get worse. But at this moment most will already forget their hatred toward God's witness: indeed, to the fallen man memory is usually short. And the society, having got rid of the righteous man, will remain with its problems, like snowball. Problems, from which, it was quite possible, that God could deliver it [the society], if it had listened to His witness.
