1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, |
2 Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones. |
3 And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name. |
4 And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not: |
5 Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people. |
6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people. |
7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God. |
8 And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you. |
9 For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him. |
10 And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. |
11 And the man that lieth with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. |
12 And if a man lie with his daughter in law, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have wrought confusion; their blood shall be upon them. |
13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. |
14 And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you. |
15 And if a man lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death: and ye shall slay the beast. |
16 And if a woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. |
17 And if a man shall take his sister, his father's daughter, or his mother's daughter, and see her nakedness, and she see his nakedness; it is a wicked thing; and they shall be cut off in the sight of their people: he hath uncovered his sister's nakedness; he shall bear his iniquity. |
18 And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he hath discovered her fountain, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people. |
19 And thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother's sister, nor of thy father's sister: for he uncovereth his near kin: they shall bear their iniquity. |
20 And if a man shall lie with his uncle's wife, he hath uncovered his uncle's nakedness: they shall bear their sin; they shall die childless. |
21 And if a man shall take his brother's wife, it is an unclean thing: he hath uncovered his brother's nakedness; they shall be childless. |
22 Ye shall therefore keep all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: that the land, whither I bring you to dwell therein, spue you not out. |
23 And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them. |
24 But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people. |
25 Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, and between unclean fowls and clean: and ye shall not make your souls abominable by beast, or by fowl, or by any manner of living thing that creepeth on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean. |
26 And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine. |
27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them. |
Today we read the continuation of the commandments about holiness, only now they are not imperative but prohibitive. We consider it quite normal to see, say, in the instructions for a washing machine or binoculars, points that strictly specify what must not be done because it would be destructive for the device. Nor does it raise questions when a coach forbids an athlete certain foods or stops his harmful habits. Yet when it comes to moral life, protest often arises in us: why is something forbidden? How can anyone forbid me anything?
When we understand that commandments of the moral and religious order are also a description of a certain path along which a person seeking God is called to walk, we will see that in spiritual life there are also natural restrictions on what can be destructive to our relationship with Him.

Reading the Book of Leviticus, it is easy to notice that everything connected in one way or another with debauchery, marital unfaithfulness, and violations of the seventh commandment in general often appears here next to mentions of such things as pagan cults, magic, spiritism, mediumship, and the like. With regard to the things listed, one can speak of violations of the first and second commandments: they are the ones that forbid believing Yahwists both participation in pagan cults and various kinds of practices connected with dark spirituality like those mentioned above. Why then do violations connected with the sexual sphere stand in the book alongside violation of the first commandment, and also the second?
The simplest and most obvious answer is that many pagan cults of antiquity involved direct violation of the seventh commandment. This was so, for example, in the case of ritual prostitution connected with the cult of the Great Goddess, which was widespread throughout the Near East, including Palestine. Yet there was also something else linking debauchery and magic more deeply than it may appear at first glance.
This concerns the power for life given by God to human beings, the energy without which life in general is impossible. From the biblical point of view, a human being is a "living soul," and in the Bible the soul is not a static structure but a flow, a dynamic reality. This dynamism is the manifestation of the life force given by God to human beings, and its forms can be very different.
Sexual life is also one of these forms, and therefore it is blessed by God, but only when it does not become an end in itself, only as long as it remains an organic part of that fullness of relationship between two people which is called marriage. If a person uses sexuality solely as an instrument for giving himself pleasure, he thereby abuses the possibilities God has given him, wasting the power granted to him for attaining the fullness of life.
All forms of magic are the same kind of abuse, as are all attempts in general to use God's power present in creation for one's own purposes without turning to God and asking His blessing. In both cases, the issue is the abuse of the possibilities God has given to human beings, with the corresponding consequences.
8 And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you. |
What is the Torah? Why does God give a person His commandments and laws? At first glance it may appear that the matter concerns a moral and ritual code that has meaning, especially if we speak of ritual, only within a concrete religious tradition. But what matters to God is not ritual, not morality, and not even religion. For Him, all that has been named is, in essence, only a means. The goal is what the biblical authors call sanctification.
Here the issue is no longer the observance of certain norms and rules that God needs for some reason, nor even morality as such, although without the observance of moral norms relationships of love with one's neighbor will hardly be possible. The issue is that entirely real, though not noticeable to everyone, effect that the presence of God has on all and everything that comes into contact with this presence. Of course, a stone remains a stone in such contact, wood remains wood, and metal remains metal. And yet stone, wood, and metal change after such contact. Before us is no longer simply nature, but nature and something else, something that is not in nature and cannot be there by definition. That very "something" that transforms nature when it is touched by the breath of the Kingdom brought into the world by the Savior.
Of course, in the times when the Book of Leviticus was written, the Kingdom was not yet so near, but its effect was still felt, and the result of this effect was called sanctification. For a human being, sanctification was connected with that meeting which a person, unlike stone, metal, wood, and even an animal, had to recognize and experience consciously. And here the commandment was absolutely necessary: otherwise the human heart could not be prepared for this meeting. That means there could be no question of the sanctification of a person without the Torah, without the commandments given by God. This is precisely why the Torah was given to man. This is precisely how, in its time, it would become, according to the apostle's word, a "guardian leading to Christ."
8 And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you. |
What it is the Torah? Why God gives to man His commands and laws? At first sight it can seem that it is about the moral and ritual code, which have meaning (especially, if it is about the rite) only within the framework of a concrete religious tradition. But indeed, for God, what is important is not the rite, nor morality and even not religion. All the quoted are in principle for Him only a means. And the purpose is what the biblical authors call sanctification. Then it is already here not about the keeping of certain standards and rules, which are necessary for a certain reason for God, and even not of morality as such, although without the keeping of the moral standards, the relation of love with the neighbor would be hardly possible.
It is a question of this so real, although not remarkable to everyone, influence, that gives God's presence to all and to everything or everyone that enter in contact with this presence. Of course, the stone upon such contact remains stone, the tree –tree and metal-metal. But all the same the stone, the tree and the metal after such a contact change. It is already not simply the nature before us, but the nature and something again, that there is not in the nature and which cannot be by definition.
This "something" that transforms the nature, when it is touched by the breath of the Kingdom brought into the world by the Savior. Of course, the time, when was written the Book of Leviticus, the Kingdom was not yet so close, but all the same its influence was felt, and the result of this influence was called sanctification. For man, the sanctification was associated with that meeting, that man, unlike stone, metal, tree and even unlike animal had to understand and experience consciously.
And here the commandments were completely necessary: because otherwise the heart of man could not be prepared for this meeting. And thus, it could not be a matter of sanctification of man without the Torah, without the commandments given by God. That is particularly why the Torah was given to man. This is exactly how it will be at the time, according to the word of the apostle, "schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ ".
